Artist Profiles

Vishwa Mohan Bhatt

Vishwa Mohan Bhatt is the king of Slide Guitar (Mohan Veena) and Cultural Ambassador of India. He has pioneered the use of guitar to play Hindustani music. He burst into fame when he received a Grammy Award 1994 for his collaboration with Ry Cooder in Meeting by the river. He received his initial training from his older brother Shashi Mohan, and is now a disciple of Ravi Shankar.

He modified his guitar by adding several chikari (drone strings tuned to the tonic), which ring out in the background when their note is struck on the main strings. This hybrid instrument, which he calls the “Mohan Veena”, is played like a Hawaiian slide guitar, and is ideally suited for the sustained, sliding notes of vocal style Indian classical music. Ustad Rashid Khan

Rashid Huasain Khan, a great vocalist, is considered perhaps the most convincing proof of what miracles the revived Gurukul system can achieve. Under the tutelage of Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan, for the last ten years in Research Academy, Calcutta, he has metamorphosed from a gawky, groaning child to an artiste of unbelievable maturity, vocal prowess and artistry.

He has been hailed as a great successor to the Bade Ghulam Ali Khan - Ameer Khan generation - an era today almost given up as lost. He had truly arrived on the scene when Pt. Bhimsen Joshi heard him at a concert in early 1988 and proclaimed that there is now at least one person in sight who is an assurance for the future of Hindustani Vocal Music. Ustad Shahid Parvez

Shahid Parvez is one of the most important Sitar players of his generation. He belongs to the great musical family representing the Imdadkhani Gharana, also known as the Etawah Gharana. He is the son of Ustad Aziz Khan who initiated Shahid Parvez into music, vocal and tabla at the tender age of 3. By the age of four he shifted to Sitar and was soon recognized as a child prodigy.

A purist from the beginning, Shahid Parvez, has developed a style of his own, combining the Gayaki and the Tantrakari schools of instrument playing “gayaki ang shos” the influence of Ustad Vilayat Khan, his father's cousin. He is being recognized as one of the best sitar players of his generation and is a favorite concert artist both in India and abroad.

Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri

Swapan Chaudhuri, the master of North India’s drum - the Tabla, and has earned a place among the greatest classical musicians of India. His virtuosity and ingenuity have ushered him in a new style of tabla playing.

He has performed throughout Europe, North America and Asia as a soloist and as an accompanist with such masters as Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Pandit Jasraj, Dr. Balmurali Krishna and others.

In 1981, Maestro Ali Akbar Khan invited him to the United States to teach at the Ali Akbar College of Music. He holds a Master’s degree in Music, and a degree in Economics from Jadavpur University, Calcutta. Mrs. Sujatha Vijayaraghavan

Sujatha Vijayaraghavan is an accomplished choreographer, a fine musician and has given performances all over in Carnatic vocal music, Hindustani Bhajans and Light music. She has trained in the Carnatic style from illustrious artists like her own mother Smt Ananthlakhsmi Sadagopan, Sri Sunderrajan, Sri C.Sankarasivam, Trivandrum, Sri R.S. Mani and Semmangudi Sri R. Srinivasa Iyer. She is bilingual scholar, writer (Short stories, articles, novel, travelogue, scripts for TV serials), Musician and composer and Scholar in Bharatanatyam and also active member of the Exnora movement concerning the environment. An All India Radio Artiste, she also has a music album of compositions of Ambujam Krishna: Gitamala, Vol 1 and is an active public speaker in English and Tamil.

Shubhra Guha

Shubhra Guha, an eminent artiste in the khayal style of singing, mastered the tradition of the Agra gharana learned from Sunil Bose has a voice of astonishing luminosity and power, capable of soaring effortlessly from one octave to the next. . She is also a disciple of sitar maestro Vilayat Khan. She is also an accomplished thumri singer.

She is a promising vocalist on the horizon of Indian classical music today. Among the musicians of her generation, she has one of the largest and the most exhaustive mental catalogues of ragas and compositions. Her singing displays characteristics of the Agra style in a striking and mellifluous manner. She has superb sense of layakari, strikingly forceful tonal quality and maturity in ragadari.

Bhimsen Joshi

Bhimsen Joshi has personally invited her to sing at the Sawai Gandharva Music Festival in Pune. Pandit Satish Vyas

Satish Vyas, a recipient of Padma Shri, is one of the fine Santoor players of India. He was initiated into Vocal Music by his father Pandit C.R. Vyas; India's top-notch Vocalist. Later on in 1978 he learnt Santoor from Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma. He had many solo concerts around the world. Arts Council of England had invited him for an extensive concert tour of United Kingdom. He had the privilege of performing at few of the prestigious Auditoriums like Semoure Centre, Heidelberg theatre, Aotea Centre's ASB Theatre in Australia and New Zealand. Ganesh Kumar

Ganesh Kumar, a Kanjira Artist, is a young Kanjira exponent (South Indian Frame Drum Tambourine) from Chennai, India. He learned from percussion maestro Sri T.H. Subash Chandran. George Ruckert GEORGE RUCKERT

George Ruckert, a fine Sarod player in western world, is a Senior Lecturer in Music at MIT, Boston, he teaches Indian, Western, and World music and performs on the sarod. His Music of India class affectionately refers to him as “Georgeji” (Indians use the suffix “ji” while addressing elders).

He is an MA, Music Theory and Composition, Queens College; Gayan Vadya Bid, Ali Akbar College, Ph.D., Ethnomusicology, UC Berkeley. After receiving a master's in western theory and composition, he became a student of the renowned Indian sarodist, Ali Akbar Khan in 1967. A co-founder and administrator of this master's important center for North Indian classical music in California, he has also performed and taught this music widely in the US, Canada, India, and Europe.

His concerts remind the quote from American composer Michael Robinson: “The raga form has the same potential to become a universal musical form. That is why it is possible for a non-Indian to find a new path within this resplendent musical form, with the only limitation being one’s self.” He has composed for orchestra, film, and dance productions, as well as published five books on the classical music of North India. Sandipan Samajpati

Sandipan Samajpati, ‘A’ Grade’ vocalist of Doordarshan (Indian National Television) and A.I.R. (All India Radio), has received extensive taleem for from Pandit Manas Chakraborty. Aparna Balaji

Aparna Balaji has been training in Vocal classical since 1985 primarily from her grandfather Sangeetha Bhushan Shri O.V. Subramaniam. Pravin Sitaram

Pravin Sitaram received his traning in mridangam from Sri P. S. Parameswaran of Bombay. Sri Parameswaran is a disciple of the Late Sri Palghat T. S. Mani Iyer. He accompanied many musicians in Bombay and has participated and won prizes in several competitions.

He has been very active in concert accompaniment of local artists as well as visiting artists from India. He has accompanied Late Dr. Chitti Babu and more recently, Sri T. V. Ramprasad, Mysore Srinath, Smt. Vani Satish, R. Prasanna , Smt. Revathi Ramaswamy, Sri Lalgudi Krishnan and Smt. Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi. He has a Doctorate in Polymer Chemistry and resides in the Boston area.

Jyoti Goho

Jyoti Goho is a highly sought-after harmonium artist in India today. The ability to understand and adapt his accompaniment to the mood and spirit of the performance has made him popular amongst all the eminent vocalists. After his intial training under the guidance of Late Sanat Banarjee and thereafter Sri Biren Bose, he bacame a disciple of Sri A.T. Kanan. He developed the art of playing harmonium under the tutelege of Sri Deb Kumar Banarjee. Aided by his knowledge of vocal music, he bloomed into a competent and sensitive harmonium accompanist. He is a full time senior faculty of SRA. The legendary Hindustani vocalist, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi regards Jyoti Goho "very highly as an artist" who is "extremely supportive as a harmonium accompanist."

Pandit Anand Gopal Bandopadhyay

Anand Gopal Bandopadhyay is from a family of musicians of the Vishnupur Gharana of West Bengal. His grandfather was the state musician of Manipur. After receiving his initial training from his father, Pandit Bandopadhyay became the disciple of Pandit Mahadeo Prasad Mishra of the Benares Gharana. He started playing professionally when he was thirteen. He was associated with the All India Radio and later with Delhi University for about seven to eight years.

Nitin Mitta

Nitin Mitta, an outstanding tabla player, received his early training in Hyderabad from Pandit G. Satyanarayana. He has performed worldwide with some of India's most celebrated and honored musicians – such as Pt. Jasraj, Dr. Prabha Atre, Pt. Rajan Sajan Mishra, Pt.Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Smt. Veena Sahasrabudhe and Pt. Budhaditya Mukherjee just to name a few.

Sanhita Nandi

Sanhita Nandi is an exponent of North Indian Vocal Styles: Khayal and Thumri genres. She was groomed by Pandit A. Kanan; a disciple of Ustad Amir Khan, in Kirana style. She learnt form other Guru’s as well, however, the central motif of her "gayaki" is Kirana.

She lives in South Jersey and teaches music. She has widely performed in the east coast (Annenberg center - Philadelphia, Philadelphia Art Museum, Rutgers University, World Bank Auditorium, and various other classical organizations in India and USA.

Music Triveni ensemble

Sven Larson - string bass, electric bass, bass pedals, percussion

Originally from Wooster, Ohio, Larson came to Boston 10 years ago and promptly began studying under veteran bass virtuoso Steve Neil (Pharaoh Sanders, McCoy Tyner). With roots in rock & roll and jazz, his tastes have broadened deeply and have led to work with Franc Graham, Four Piece Suit, Jim's Big Ego, Nicole Nelson, and Sarah Brindell, to name a few. In addition to being a co-writing and co-arranging member of Bangalore, Sven is in demand on the national and international blues circuit and has backed such notables as Big Jack Johnson, Junior Watson, James Harmon, Sherman Robertson (Paul Simon's 'Graceland') and Tutu Jones. On top of his free-lance work and teaching, he currently plays full time with blues legend Toni Lynn Washington, and is a member of the rock band The Gulf. Sven has also studied North Indian classical music practice and concepts side by side with Phil under the tutelage of Master vocalists Dr. Pradeep Shukla of the Learnquest Academy in Waltham, MA, and Pt. Vinayak Torvi of Bangalore, India.

Phil was a founding member of Men & Volts and The Roys, certified (not to mention certifiable) local legends in their day. A prolific songwriter, he has composed for film (Your Own True Self) and theatre (The Maids, The Seagull) had tunes covered by The Incredible Casuals, Chandler Travis Philharmonic, and Ann Richmond Boston (of Atlanta's Swimming Pool Q's). He was for years a member of David Locke's Agbekor Drum and Dance Club, where he absorbed the fundamentals of the music of the Ewe people (West Africa), and has been a lifelong devotee of Hindustani classical music. Born in Paris and into a peripatetic childhood (with a stint in Hong Kong, among other far-flung locales), he is a graduate of the New England Conservatory, has been a happy resident of the Greater Boston area for many years, and has racked up an impressive resume of recordings and performances.

Dave Jamrog

Dave Jamrog has played drums for international artists such as Texas bluesman Sherman Robertson, Grammy Award nominee Mighty Sam McClain, and jazz legend Clark Terry's Big Bad Band (NCL Floating Jazz Festival shared bill with Dizzy Gillespie in 1993).

For the past five years Dave has been playing and touring with 8 time W.C. Handy (A National Blues Award) nominee Toni Lynn Washington, and JazzTimes Magazine featured artist Kate Schutt. Most recent projects include drumming and producing/audio engineering for Bangalore, an Indian and Middle-Eastern influenced improvisational rock trio led by Sven Larson on bass with Phil Kaplan on guitars and other nights with singer/songwriter and Boston Philharmonic Violinist Jeff Louie, also gospel rocking vocalist/guitarist Jen Murdza, In addition to playing, Dave teaches drums and percussion on staff at the Boston Arts Academy, Boston's "Fame" School for the arts, and has two private teaching studios.
